The accumulation, validation and spread of knowledge is a social function that changes with the evolution of technology. Once limited to what could be passed along verbally by living persons, the invention of writing allowed knowledge to be recorded. Such records were limited until the invention of printing allowed for duplication and distribution. With electronic media, the creation and distribution becomes a single, immediate activity.
